👥 Practice Groups
We split into smaller groups by color, based on age and riding experience. We'll make adjustments as the season goes on — we've asked some riders to change groups to where we think they will have more fun. Focus on riding comfortable and confident, not at the limit of their ability.
Focus on: Shifting, braking, and body position — putting the basics together on the trail! 🚵

Check-in reminders (~5 min)
Ask the kids: "Can someone tell/show me what 'X' means?" — review last week's concepts:
- Coasting & airplane wings
- Standing & seat is lava
- Little bites (ratcheting)
- Making a train (riding in a group)
Warm-up games (~30 min)
- Red light / green light — or the "Ghost!" variation: coach turns their back (green light), then spins around (red light — kids yell "Ghost!")
- Slow race — get kids out of the saddle and taking little bites
- Shifting game — get everyone into their lowest (easiest) gear; ride in a big circle and shift up one gear per loop until maxed out, then shift back down. Watch eyes — keep looking up & out while shifting.
- Braking box game — set up a cone box; riders pedal toward it and practice stopping inside without skidding. Work up to braking as late as possible.
Trail ride
Alt route to carriage roads — "ice cream truck" loop. Return via walk back up the dirt hill to the lot (if kids are up for it) or via the alt route back. Practice shifting on coaches' cues during the ride; integrate braking box stops at rest points and cornering cues at bends.

Trail ride
Coaches/kids choice of alt route or dirt downhill to inner trails — modified "Straight A's" loop, returning via dirt trail (uphill) to the lot. Session uphill shifting on the practice hill in the meadow; integrate braking and cornering games on descents and trail turns. At the practice hill wrap-up, see if kids are ready ("maybe means no") to put it all together on the bumpier descent back to the bridge. Try riding the Esker Loop singletrack section to the right of the Carriage Road if kids are ready.

Check-in & warm-up games
Focus: Body and Bike Separation and Getting over small features.
- Limbo — get the chest low and let the bike move underneath you; this is the key to body and bike separation when getting over features
- Small ramp practice — in the field, ride over a small ramp. First work on a good ready position: knees and arms bent, airplane pedals. Focus on the bike coming up and then down under you, absorbing movement with arms and legs so your body stays steady.
Trail ride
Mini-rock-roller scavenger hunt! Start on the dirt downhill and ride straight to the 3 Drops Trail to practice body position and riding features. Ride out to rock meadow with the kids on the lookout for rocks to practice rolling over. Make sure to ride over the line of rocks before the bridge! Take time to session and work on technique — see how many features they can find. If there's time, explore a couple of the side trails on the way back.

Beaver Brook Inner Singletrack Rip! Start on the dirt downhill and ride straight to the 3 Drops Trail to practice body position and riding features. Hit some singletrack on the way towards rock meadow with the kids on the lookout for rocks to practice rolling over. Optional trip out to the session hill, then finish with a lap of the Ghostrider Descent if the kids have the legs for it. Take time to session and work on technique — see how many features they can find. If there's time, explore a couple of the side trails on the way back.
